3 Book Series I Started Reading But Never Finished | Part 2

November 11, 2019

I’m a voracious reader when it comes to series. I find one that I like and tear through it in a matter of days. But sometimes a series doesn’t quite click with me, or I can’t find all the books in the library, or I get distracted by something new and shiny and I don’t end up finishing the series I’m reading currently. A few weeks ago I shared a list of three series that, for one reason or another I never got around to finishing. But of course, those are just a few of the series that got left behind along the way. So today I thought I’d put my hand up and admit to another three series that I started, but never got to the end of.

Red Queen Series | Victoria Aveyard

I’m always drawn to the covers of these books with their simplistic yet effect designs. And the concept of the social classes of the red bloods and silver bloods has always been super intriguing to me. I did get as far as reading the first book, but unfortunately, despite the pretty covers and the interesting ideas, this series and I just didn’t hit it off. Maybe it was me being worn out by yet another love triangle, a trope I’m not particularly partial to, maybe it was just that I didn’t quite love the characters the way I was meant to. Who knows? I did pick up book two briefly, but that one held my interest even less, so unfortunately the Red Queen series and I parted ways amicably.

Inheritance Cycle | Christopher Paolini

Eragon captured my imagination as a teenager who wanted to be an author. I loved Eragon so much when I first read it, and eagerly borrowed the next two books in the series, ready to rip through all of them in a couple of sittings. And then I started reading Eldest, the second book, and that excitement died a little. Instead of high adventures and excitement, my lasting memory of Eldest is that of an endless training montage, the main character being told that his crush was never going to work out, and him falling over every five pages due to some mysterious illness. Not quite the way I was hoping the series would continue. I couldn’t face many more pages of the repetitiveness, so instead I returned the books to the library and moved on.

Miss Peregrin’s Peculiar Children | Ransom Riggs

I LOVE Miss Peregrin’s Home For Peculiar Children. Everything about it, from the weird, semi-creepy antique photos scattered throughout the book to the concept of there being hidden pockets of time looping over and over, to the imaginative abilities that each of the children had, caught my imagination. It’s cool, it’s weird, and it’s so worth reading. I was so excited to get my hands on the second book in the series, Hollow City. Unfortunately, like quite a few sequels I’ve attempted in the past, too many of the things I loved about the first book changed, and now we’re not in a time loop but we’re somewhere else entirely and is this a travelling book now? Hollow City isn’t a bad book by any means, but after how much I loved book one, this sequel just didn’t grab my imagination in quite the same way, and I didn’t finish it, or read the third book. I would still like to finish this trilogy one day, though, but it probably won’t be for a while.

So there we have it, another three series that I started reading but never made it to the end of, unfortunately. Have you read any of these series? What series did you start reading that you put down for one reason or another? What’s one series you absolutely loved and you think I should check out?
