4 Free Online Resources for Writers

April 13, 2018

One of the best things about being a writer and being online is the fact that there are so many great free resources, which is especially fantastic for those of us on a budget, like me. From tracking progress, to helping you find focus, or inspiration, you can find pretty much anything you need. Today I thought I would share a few of my favourite writerly resources that are both super helpful, and 100% free!

Pinterest

Pinterest is one of my favourite places to find inspiration for my writing. Whether I’m a little stuck in my novel, or I’m not quite sure what I want to write yet, or I just want to get a feel for the project I’m working on, Pinterest is the perfect place to find inspiring pictures to help you get unstuck. Many writers like to create mood/inspiration boards for individual projects, while others like it more for the writing prompts and random inspiration. Whatever you’re looking for, there are some awesome profiles out there that you should definitely be following. Some of these include:

Novel Inspiration

Especially good if you’re looking for pictures to inspire characters. They have loads of highly organised boards for inspiring people, as well as many boards fill with specific, non-people related inspiration, like nautical pictures, and loads more.

Elizabeth Lewis

Also fantastic for finding characters, and has a lot of other interesting boards, such as boards dedicated to objects, armour, or inspiration specific to certain genres, such as sci-fi or fantasty

Imogen Elvis (that’s me!)

Lots of good boards for finding inspiration for characters, settings, genre specific pictures, writing prompts, and random inspiration that doesn’t quite fit into any of those categories, but are really cool anyway.

Coffitivity

This is a really helpful website providing ambient background noise for writers who want to have something playing in the background without becoming too distracted. It’s very simple, but super helpful. Personally, I like to pair this ambient noise with a soothing playlist of background music from Spotify. One of my absolute favourites is Instrumental Hip-Hop | Chill Hip-Hop | Jazzy which fades into the background perfectly when you need to focus.

E.ggtimer

A really simple online timer that allows you to set any custom amount of time you like, and also has a couple on inbuilt preset timers such as a Pomodoro timer. It’s really simple and practical, and is highly useful when I’m trying to keep my phone away for distraction purposes and still need to set a timer.

NaNoWriMo Word Sprints

If you’ve got an account on the NaNoWriMo website (sign up is 100% free) then you have access to their cool word sprint tool. During NaNoWriMo months, there are public word sprint sessions, timed writing sessions to help you focus, or you can create your own at any point during the year. You can even host your own group word sprints and invite your NaNoWriMo friends to come and join you.

these are just four of my favourite free writing resources, but there are so many more out there, both ones that I know and use personally, and, I’m sure, plenty that I haven’t heard of before. What are some of your favourites? Have you used any of these before? What websites or resources should I be checking out in the future? And also, would you be interested in a second post on this subject? Let’s chat in the comments down below!
