I’m Looking For Beta Readers!

January 29, 2020

We’re at almost the end of January, and I don’t know about you, but I’ve made some huge strides with my writing goals for the year already. Most of this month has been spend deep in the editing caves working on my latest project. Rather than writing more fantasy, which is of course my first love, I’m actually branching out into a brand new YA series. I like to think of it as X-Men x Agents of SHIELD x Renegades. After writing nothing but fantasy for the past couple of years, it’s been an absolute blast to write something completely different, no matter how much I love the genre..

This book, (working title Snow) is one of my favourite things I’ve ever written, even rivalling my Song Magic series. I first wrote Snow five years ago, and have been working on it on and off ever since. It’s been my beloved side project, a bit of an escape from my major works over the years. And now, after pouring much time and energy into it this month, Snow is finally at a stage where I’m read to get some second opinions on it. Which means I’m on the hunt once again for some beta readers willing to give it a read. Maybe you might be interested?

Here’s a (very) rough synopsis to give you an idea of what Snow is all about:

Eric is sick of being bullied, just because he’s a mutant. When a new law that requires every mutant register their abilities is proposed, he throws himself into the protests against it, determined not to let anyone else target mutants because of their gifts. But Eric quickly finds himself mixed up in something a lot more serious than he was expecting.

Nicola is thrilled when she and the rest of her team of teenaged mutants, are assigned their first mission; to investigate a suspect connected with the riots. She sees this as her big chance to prove herself worthy as an agent. But she and her team quickly find themselves in over their heads when their target turns out to be more than they realised.

With the protests escalating, and with the law about to go before the senate, time is running out for the team to find the man behind the riots. Eric, Nicola, and the team must join forces in a desperate attempt to stop the final protest before someone gets hurt. Because if they fail, the consequences will be devastating for mutants and regulars alike.

Genre: YA/Superhero

Cool things about this book: It has mutants, agents, spy gadgets, fun banter, sass and sarcasm, witty characters, a couple of Shakespeare references, a few betrayals, and plenty of tough choices. It’s dual point of view, and also has a boy saving the world in his pyjamas.

Timeframe: Beta readers would need to be able to get feedback to me within 4-6 weeks. So, before April 1st at the very latest.

What I need from you: All I need is for you to read the book and give me an honest opinion on it from a reader’s perspective. Things like, what you enjoyed, what you didn’t. What didn’t make sense to you. Anything that was confusing. That sort of thing. I will provide a list of general areas that I’d appreciate specific feedback on if you want some guidelines.

What I’m not looking for: Line edits, typo spotting, or in-depth critiques of my writing in general. While Snow is structurally pretty sound, I haven’t finished polishing up the text yet, and while I’ll give you the cleanest copy of the manuscript I can, there will be typos, grammar errors, clunky dialogue, and other problems, which I’ll be fixing at a later stage.

Beta Reader Sign Up Form

Does this sound interesting to you? I hope so! If you’d be interested in helping me out as a beta reader, I would love for you to leave your name and an email address I can contact you at using the form. I will only use your email address to contact you about beta reading. I’ll be sending out the book and some feedback questions within the next week or so. So please, if you have any time to help me out, I would appreciate it so much.  I’m excited about this book, and I hope, after reading this post, you are too.
