Can you believe it? My third novel Frost Hands is out in the world at long last! I’ve been so excited to be able to share this book with people, ever since I first wrote it nearly six years ago. Apparently all my best ideas take a while to come to fruition, but let me tell you, it was absolutely worth all the time it took me to craft Frost Hands into the perfect book. It’s one of my favourite stories I’ve ever written, and my first foray into a genre other than fantasy. I’m always going to love my fantasy adventures, but Frost Hands holds a very special piece of my heart, and now I get to share it with you all.
In case you missed seeing it in my previous posts, this is what Frost Hands is all about:
Being a mutant has never brought Eric anything but trouble. When a new law is proposed requiring all mutants to register their abilities, he’s determined to fight it any way he can. His stepfather’s protests feel like a step in the right direction, but to his horror, Eric quickly discovers that they’re not as innocent as they seem.
Nicola is thrilled when she and her team are given their first real mission; investigating the recent attacks disrupting the protests. At last, she can prove she has what it takes to be an agent. But mistake after mistake leaves Nicola and her team scrambling as they chase a target who always seems to be one step ahead.
As things take a deadly turn, Eric and Nicola must join forces in a desperate attempt to stop the final protest. In a battle of mutants against mutants, doing what’s right means sacrificing everything.
Hopefully you’re well and truly hooked on the concept now, but just in case you’re still on the fence about whether you should give my book a look, today I thought I’d outline the 5 best reasons why you should buy my book.
1) It has two amazing POV characters. Eric is driven, passionate about looking after other mutants and protecting them from people who hate them for their abilities, and a little too serious at times. He means well, but finds himself in more trouble than he can handle. Even though things are difficult for him though, he keeps trying to find the right thing to do, no matter how difficult it might be.
By contrast, Nicola, is bright, witty, sarcastic, and occasionally surprisingly deep. She covers her insecurities under a blasé attitude and a thick layer of wisecracking, but she’s actually very sincere and desperate to prove that she has what it takes to be a real agent. She’s small and feisty and isn’t afraid to take on the world, and stand up to anyone she believes in wrong.
2) It has awesome mutant abilities. I’ve always loved characters with strange and wonderful abilities, who can do things few others can. Frost Hands gave me the opportunity to write about all the amazing powers and mutations that I’ve always loved so much. There’s Eric’s ice powers, Nicola’s water abilities, people who can shape shift, super strength, telepathy, and a whole host of other cool powers.
3) It’s packed full of some of my favourite themes and tropes in fiction, to read as well as to write. Frost Hands is so totally different from the world of my Song Magic books, and it’s be amazing to be able to play around with different things. I’ve gotten to try out some awesome scenarios and scenes I’d never be able to pull off in one of my fantasy novels. This book has secret agents, rebellion, family drama, and betrayal, as well as gadgets and spying and intrigue and action. It’s a modern world with big problems, and difficult solutions, and I absolutely love it.
4) It has a stellar villain. I’ve always loved villains who are completely convinced that they’re doing the right thing, that they’re walking the hard line that no one else will. While I love me a villain who is just evil for the sake of it, some of my favourite villains ever are complex and drive by the belief that they’re in the right. Especially when they can make a credible argument for why they’re really on the side of right. Frost Hands’ villain was so much fun to write. He is passionate about helping other mutants and is completely convinced that he’s in the right, even though his methods are just plain wrong.
5) It’s the start of a brand new series. Personally, I love discovering a book that’s part of a series because it means that if I like it, then I have more books to anticipate and follow along with. You get to spend so much more time with the characters, and with the world, and the overarching story. I have big plans for this series, going forward, and I hope that people will be as excited to follow this story as I am.
So there you have it, five excellent reasons why you should pick Frost Hands up and give it a read. Now your next step is to hop on over to Amazon and pick up a copy for yourself. It’s available in both print and Kindle editions, to suit whatever style of reading you prefer. And while you’re at it, why not add Frost Hands on Goodreads? It would mean so much to me and my book if you did!
