The Shattering Song | My NaNoWriMo 2018 Novel

November 2, 2018

On Wednesday, I posted about what NaNoWriMo looks like for me this year, some things I’m excited about, things that are wildly different from other years, and things I’ve done to prepare (check the post out HERE if you happened to miss it). But one thing I didn’t actually cover in that post is what I’m going to be writing this year. Which, when you think about it, is rather remiss of me, and something I aim to fix today.

This year’s project is ‘The Shattering Song’. It’s a YA fantasy, and is the sequel to my previous book ‘The Crystal Tree’ (click HERE to find out more about that). And, most excitingly, it’s the final book in my duology, so I actually get to write the end of the entire story, which is both scary, and amazing.

A mock cover I made for NaNoWriMo

So, what is this book about? This handy synopsis has you covered:

Briar believed that reaching the Crystal Tree would be the end of the battle, but getting there was only half the fight. Now she and her friends race south, to the capital, to stop Sachio before he takes the throne he believes he deserves. But an army of children is marching on the city, wielding a strange, wild magic, and destroying everything in their path. The king grows madder every day, and Sachio seems to be the city’s last hope. With the ruling council on the verge of crowning him king, Briar and her allies have one chance to stop him, and doing so means sacrificing everything; magic, freedom, and maybe even their very lives.

I am super excited to finally be writing this book. It’s a story that I love, with a cast I adore, and I’m writing the resolution of my duology, which of course I’m excited about. Who doesn’t love getting to the end of a major project? But at the same time, I’m almost a little scared of this project, because it’s a sequel, it’s the first time I’ll have written the end of a series, and, to be honest, I’ve had quite a few struggles figuring this book out. However, now that I know the general plot of ‘The Shattering Song’ (thank you outlining for helping me  out), I am so eager to be writing this thing.

We’re already on day two of NaNoWriMo, at least here in Australia we are, and I can’t wait to see where this book is going to lead me over the course of the month. Fingers crossed, but I have a really good feeling about it. For now though, I’m trying to relax, forget about trying to get this book perfect first time, and just enjoy the experience of writing. There is no feeling quite like creating something fresh and new. This is definitely my favourite part of the writing process, and I am loving every minute of it.
So, that’s what my NaNo novel looks like. What do you think? Have you checked out the first book? How is your NaNoWriMo going? What are you writing? If you’re not participating in NaNo this month, what are you working on at the moment, writing or otherwise? Let’s chat!

  1. Oooh, the sequel! Duologies are one of my favorite things right now, so now I’m even more excited. Hope the writing goes well for you.

I’m not taking part in NaNoWriMo this year. I thought about it seeing as I’m behind on writing my current novel, but I didn’t want one more thing to stress about with school and work. Instead, I think I’ll do some writing sprints and hopefully finish this story before Christmas.
