3 Books On My Birthday Wish List

November 18, 2020

As well as being the month of NaNoWriMo, November brings my birthday. And, as any good bookworm does, I’ve got a wish list of books that’s three miles long. I’ve dropped subtle hints, enthused about books in front of my family, and even passed out a short list of titles that I’d be grateful to receive. You know, all the usual strategies for convincing people to buy you books. Out of my list however, of course there are a few books that I am a little more eager to read than others, and today I thought that I would share three of the top books on my wish list.

Steelheart

Brandon Sanderson

Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics. But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his will.

Nobody fights the Epics…nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans, they spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then assassinating them.

And David wants in. He wants Steelheart — the Epic who is said to be invincible. The Epic who killed David’s father. For years, like the Reckoners, David’s been studying, and planning — and he has something they need. Not an object, but an experience.

He’s seen Steelheart bleed. And he wants revenge.

I LOVE books about people with superpowers (probably why I wrote one of my own, haha). I’ve only read a couple of Brandon Sanderson’s other books, but I thoroughly enjoyed them and have his Way Of Kings books sitting on my shelf waiting to be read. So obviously I want these books to add to the collection. The description reminds me of Marissa Meyer’s Renegades, which I loved, so this book is definitely high on my list.

Caraval

Stephanie Garber

Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over.

But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic.

Everything about this book just sounds so intriguing. Magical islands, a once-a-year performance and a kidnapped sister all sounds right up my alley. I’m a sucker for a good book involving magic and sisterly bonds (I may have written one of those myself too! It’s true what they say. If there’s a book you want to read, you have to write it yourself). I’ve heard such good things things about this book, and I desperately want to immerse myself in this amazing sounding world, so maybe for my birthday, if I’ve been a very good girl?

Vicious

V. E. Schwab

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.

Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?

Again, how can I resist a good book about people with super-powers, especially when this one seems to have a very villainous bent to it? I love it when experiments go awry, friends turn to enemies, and of course, revenge plots. Everything about this book appeals to me so much. The blurb makes it sound like an awesome friends to enemies, superhero origin story and villain-centric book all in one, and I need it in my life so much.

These are the top three books on my birthday wish list. Fingers crossed that at least one of them appears in my gifts, but I’ll be happy with almost any book, haha. I’m a simple bookworm. I receive a book of some sort and I am content for days. But I would love to hear from you. What are your top three books on your wish list? Have you read any of these? What book would you recommend to me?

Want a new book to add to your wish list? May I recommend my brand new YA sci-fi novel Frost Hands? If you like the sound of Steelheart and Vicious then you will love this book, full of superpowers teens out to save the world. It’s available now on Amazon in both print and ebook form. Grab your copy today!

  1. Happy birthday! I love basically any book by Brandon Sanderson, and though I haven’t read Steelheart yet, it’s bound to be good. Also, I can confirm The Way of Kings is awesome. I really want to read the latest book in the series, Rhythm of War, but I’m collecting the paperbacks, so now I have to wait a year. I also enjoy V. E. Schwab’s writing style. I hope you receive one (or more!) of the books on your list.
